Peanut Butter Chocolate Squares

We love, love, love the classic combination of chocolate and peanut butter at my house.  This particular recipe is probably the most requested treat in our family.

1 cup butter, melted
1 cup peanut butter
1 (16 oz.) pkg. powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 (12 oz.) pkg. semisweet chocolate chips, melted

1.  Combine butter, peanut butter, powdered sugar, and graham cracker crumbs in a mixing bowl.  Stir together until well blended.  Press into ungreased 9"x13" pan.
2.  Pour melted chocolate over top, spreading evenly.  Cut into bars when chocolate is set.

  • You can speed the process of the chocolate setting by putting the pan in the fridge.  Just remember to take it out at least a half hour before you want to cut it.  When it's cold the chocolate will crack.
  • We have often wanted to make these bars but not had the graham cracker crumbs.  We've experimented with substitute ingredients with pretty good results (All Bran cereal and Honeycomb cereal to name two; pulse in the blender).
  • One of our latest variations on this has been to add coconut into the peanut butter mixture.  SO GOOD!

  1. A girl after mine own heart... :)

  2. thank you thank you for posting this! i've loved these forever but can't seem to find a recipe anywhere - off to the store for some graham crackers!

  3. pretty sure this should've listed 1/2 cup of butter, and not 1 cup. mine turned out mushy and inedible. and i know my peanut butter bars. seriously though, does it make sense for a dish this size to have two sticks of butter in it? that's a lot of butter.
thankfully my little girl had a great time making them. she just won't get the joy of eating her own creation.

  4. pretty sure this should've stated 1/2 cup of butter and not 1cup. 2 sticks of butter for such a small portion? that's a lot of butter. fortunately my daughter had a blast making them with me but, because they're so mushy, she won't get to enjoy her own creation.

    1. Sorry you had a hard time with the recipe. It's definitely two sticks! I've been making this recipe for 25 years so I know it well. Wish I could be more help, but not having watched you make it, I have no clue what went wrong. If you give me more info, I might be able to help you find the error. :)

    2. Had a thought the other day....did you add 16 oz of powdered sugar? Or did you mistakenly think of that as 2 cups? Because 16 oz of powdered sugar is 3 3/4 cups.

  5. Man I'm sorry Julie, I think I figured out my mistake. Apparently a 16 oz bag of powdered sugar is not the same as a 16oz measuring cup of powdered sugar. If I remember correctly, 16 oz is 2 cups on a measuring cup, but a 16 oz bag of confectioners sugar would equal 3 & 3/4 cups. Guess it's a powder vs liquid thing? I don't know.
But to think I said (in my head) ,"Probably ought to verify that conversion you're going to try buddy? Nah, I'm good." I'll learn one day :)

My apologies for jumping the gun.

    1. treeman.....glad we got it figured out! Measure twice, cut once, right? No worriees! I do stuff like that all the time!
